Unity 6 update: what happened and how we’re making it right

Over the past few weeks, a lot of you experienced more crashes than usual. After a thorough investigation, we found the root issues for crashing were connected to our Unity 6 upgrade. We are confident that we are back to normal playing experience for the most part.

What happenedUnity updates are a fact of life for any game. Without them, we couldn’t keep shipping Rec Room across all platforms. However, when we do these upgrades, they should feel invisible to you. Unity 6 was a big update that had been on our radar for a while. These types of migrations are notoriously risky - it's the very foundation of the game itself. And so we did months of planning, testing, and full rehearsals, but even with that, our early October build showed something was off. Crash rates spiked and players felt the pain.We made this a company-wide priority to fix. Still, finding the root cause wasn’t straightforward. Unity sits at the foundation of everything we build, which means a change like this can break… well… almost anything. Developers from across the company spent two straight weeks investigating, fixing, and patching. The issue turned out to be buried deep in the code related to rendering which is known to be difficult to reproduce, and even harder to confirm a fix for.The good news: those Unity 6 crash issues are now resolved. There are still a few smaller, platform-specific bugs we’re tracking, and we’ll update you as we make progress there.
